Virtuoso From Afghanistan is a 2002 CD by Ustad Mohammad Omar. This was recorded in 1974. Omar plays an Afghani instrument called the rahab and is joined by legendary tabla player Zakir Hussain. It is released by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

The late Ustad Mohammad Omar was, perhaps, Afghanistan's greatest musician, a virtuoso on the rabab (a plucked lute that's the ancestor of India's sarod) who was largely responsible for making the folk instrument into something classical. This album -- from the only concert he played in the U.S. while teaching at the University of Washington in 1974 -- is a remarkable endeavor. Not only does it showcase his superb playing on a selection of Afghani classical pieces, but it teams him with Indian percussion master Zakir Hussain, the pair playing together with virtually no rehearsal, although it's impossible to tell that much of this was moved by spirit rather than practice (and most will never even notice that Omar breaks a sympathetic string on the rabab during the first track). The five pieces are extended, wonderful meditations that follow a standard formula of improvisation followed by the composition in a fixed melodic mode and rhythmic cycle. It's Omar's improvisations that truly startle, even more than the beauty of the compositions themselves. His fingers are fleet and the complex patterns he makes are entrancing -- to try and follow them becomes an almost impossible task. To be fair, the album's far from easy listening; it demands a great deal of concentration, but rewards it magnificently (and kudos to Hussain, who inserts himself into the music as if born to it). Things do lighten up with the relatively short final cut, "Keliwali," a popular Pashtun folk melody, exquisitely performed. As a reminder that Afghanistan is a country with a proud cultural heritage -- and its own wonderful musicians -- this is vital.

1. Emen - Tintal
2. Bopali - Jhaptal
3. Tabla Solo
4. Pelo - Tintal
5. Keliwali

Anoushka Shankar - Home (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time - 55:14 minutes | 557 MB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Artwork: Digital booklet

[-- Вход на форум --]

Anoushka Shankar is a Indian sitar player and composer. She is the daughter of Ravi Shankar and the half-sister of Norah Jones. Her latest solo album "Home", released on Deutsche Grammophone label. "Home" is a pure Indian classical album which showcases the meditative and virtuosic qualities of the Indian raga. Home features two ragas, one of which is a creation of Ravi Shankar's, and with them Anoushka shares an intimate, heartfelt live performance in the traditional style.

Four-time Grammy-nominated Anoushka Shankar, “one of the greatest sitar players in the world” (Rolling Stone), presents Home: a pure Indian classical album that showcases the meditative and virtuosic qualities of the Indian raga.

After several stunning experimental/crossover albums, including the Grammy-nominated recordings Rise, Traveller and Traces Of You, Anoushka returns to her classical roots, paying homage to the teachings of her father and guru Ravi Shankar. Home features two ragas, one of which is a creation of Ravi Shankar’s, and with them Anoushka shares an intimate, heartfelt live performance in the traditional style. Home is a paradigm of the Indian Classical genre, exemplifying the unique dichotomy between the ancient structure and in-the-moment improvisations. Home is self-produced by Anoushka, and on it she strove to record the ancient instruments at an unprecedented, “high-definition” quality, working with a team of experts to design a studio in her own home that would be uniquely suited to the timbre of her instrument. A beautifully penned treatise on Indian classical music written by Ravi Shankar in 1965 accompanies the album. With Home, Anoushka continues her journey exploring modern and fresh ways to reinterpret and keep alive the beautiful musical traditions of India. Ravi Shankar once said: “There is a saying in Sanskrit - "Ranjayathi iti Raga" - which means, "that which colours the mind is a raga.” With “Home” Anoushka does just that.

Tracklist:

01 - Guru: Raga Jogeshwari - Alaap
02 - Guru: Raga Jogeshwari - Jod, Jhala
03 - Guru: Raga Jogeshwari - Gat In Rupaktal
04 - Celebration: Raga Manj Khamaj

The second album by Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart continued the bassist's exploration into ethnic fusion, merging together music from different world traditions with pop production and his own dub-influenced bass guitar. Fans of Wobble's earlier work with Holgar Czukay and Public Image Limited might be surprised and a bit dismayed at first by the glossy production and pop nature of some of the tracks here; one would never have guessed that Wobble would come up with something as commercial as the Latin pop of "Ungodly Kingdom." However, much of the music is remarkable and on each listen seems to contain something new. Wobble is far more interested in experimentation than simply adding world sounds to pop music. The tracks with Middle Eastern influences, including the amazing "Everyman's an Island," are quite remarkable and most feature the fine talents of Natasha Atlas. Meanwhile, the trance-like opener, "Visions of You," which guests Sinéad O'Connor on vocals, is absolutely beautiful. On the title track, Wobble even returns to his past, with he and guitarist Justin Adams bringing the sound of early PiL forward ten years.

It goes without saying that Anoushka Shankar is a virtuoso sitar player, but one can never be sure how she will use her skills. She has given some memorable performances in the past, playing ragas alongside her legendary father and teacher Ravi, but her solo work has edged towards the experimental and pop mainstream. Her Breathing Under Water album, recorded with electronica exponent Karsh Kale, included a ballad from Sting. Now comes a very different project, in which she explores the links between Indian music and Spanish flamenco, the result of ancient Gypsy migration. It's an area that has fascinated Nitin Sawhney – who provides the sleeve notes – and allows her to demonstrate her inspired instrumental work in the company of Indian musicians and the flamenco elite, including the producer and guitarist Javier Limón.

Brazil Classics 2: O Samba is a 1989 compilation CD from the Luaka Bop label. It consists of samba variations from Brazil, compiled by David Byrne of the Talking Heads.

This is a compilation of samba from the collecting hands of David Byrne of Talking Heads fame. The selections primarily focus on the modern forms of the genre, more specifically on the studio end of the spectrum, with little or no relation to the large-scale productions associated with Carnaval in Rio. There are bits of reference to the classic sambas of the '60s in the songs here, and explorations into jazz on the side. Nods to Afro-Cuban influences are thick in the lyrics, going so far as to have a full song from the Candomble traditions based on the Yoruba orishas. Beyond this, though, there's a whole range of modern Brazilian music present in the background of these tracks, as slighter influences from MPB and Tropicalia quietly creep in now and then. The main force here though is the creative energy of a number of newer samba composers, forming exceptional works for the various singers. It can range from frenetic to extremely relaxed, but it's always solid music. It's the range of coverage, perhaps, that makes the album worth hearing. As such, it makes an outstanding jumping-off point for further listening in the realm of the samba.

Various Artists – Vanuata: The Music Tradition of West Futuna (1998)
World/Folk | FLAC lossless | cuesheets+log | covers+booklet | 54m44s | 284 mb
Label: Unesco/Auvidis | cat. no. D 8274

[-- Вход на форум --]

Vanuatu, a small island nation, is located approximately 1800 miles north of New Zealand. Composed of 82 small islands (65 of which are inhabited), Vanuatu was initially under Spanish, then French, and finally British rule before the archipelago became an independent nation in 1980. Its name signifies its newfound status: vanua (“land,” “home”), and tu (“stand”). The island of West Futuna is located on the southeastern edge of the archipelago, with five villages and a population of about 500.
The lively music of West Futuna shows signs of Western influence with distinctive local twists, such as lyrics in a Pidgin English varietal called Bislama and use of the bottle piano: a scale of glass bottles filled with different levels of water to produce different pitches. The music commonly features other popular Polynesian elements, such as ukulele, guitar, and hymn singing, brought over by 19th century missionaries. This album includes contemporary songs, church music, tagi (memorial songs), traditional dances, children’s games, and malaria and AIDS awareness songs.

Raised in a refugee camp in Algeria, Aziza Brahim embodies and mourns the displacement of North Africa’s Sahrawi people. Her ascent has been steady rather than spectacular, her breakthrough coming with 2014’s Soutak, an elegant acoustic set that drew from her adopted Barcelona home. Here, Brahim embraces the electric desert blues popularised by Tinariwen and Tamikrest (with whom she shares producer Chris Eckman). It’s a buoyant sound – Brahim’s voice is too airy for drones and chants – led by rolling pieces such as Calles de Dajla and followed by slow, contemplative blues. At its heart is a title track grieving for the exiled thousands stranded in an inhospitable tract of Western Sahara, whose only escape is “music and imagination”.

Onwards To Mars! is the twentieth anniversary release from the big Balkan brass band that is Fanfare Ciocarlia. One of the finest live acts on Earth, the band's energy, musicality and sheer unfettered sense of fun readily translate to record, making this album one of the most uplifting and cheerful collections one could wish to hear.
